- DOJ and the FBI said on Oct 20 that Operation Not Forgotten 2026, a personnel surge from April 1 to Sept 30 focused on unresolved cases in Indian country (priority on violence against women and children, including missing or murdered people), resulted in 118 arrests, 41 people charged federally, 25 child victims identified or located, and 72 weapons recovered. FBI agents conducted 990 interviews and 232 search operations. [DOJ press release, Oct 20](https://www.justice.gov/opa/pr/justice-department-announces-results-operation-not-forgotten-2026)
- DOJ reports the surge supported 548 case investigations, 59% more than in 2025, and that arrests rose 123% and federal charges 52% over 2025. Personnel rotated through 12 FBI field offices. [DOJ press release](https://www.justice.gov/opa/pr/justice-department-announces-results-operation-not-forgotten-2026)
- DOJ says the FBI has more than 4,000 open investigations in Indian country, including death, child abuse, domestic violence and adult sexual abuse cases. [DOJ press release](https://www.justice.gov/opa/pr/justice-department-announces-results-operation-not-forgotten-2026)
**What this doesn't tell us:** these are counts of enforcement activity reported by DOJ, not measures of crime levels, and charges are not convictions. The release does not report how many cases were resolved or the surge's cost, and year-over-year increases partly reflect a larger operation (more cases worked).

- The Bureau of Justice Statistics (Oct 9) published the first estimates from the redesigned National Crime Victimization Survey (NCVS-R), for 2024. In 2024's split sample, the redesigned survey produced a violent victimization rate of 28.7 per 1,000 people age 12 or older, versus 23.3 on the legacy instrument (23% higher). Property crime without vandalism was 127.6 vs 97.6 per 1,000 households (31% higher). BJS says the new instrument generally produced larger estimates, so the two sets of numbers are not directly comparable. - DOJ (Oct 15) announced the end of Operation Show Me Justice, an ATF-led violent-crime enforcement surge in St. Louis. DOJ's release reports more than 435 arrests, 166 illegal firearms seized and 81 kg of illicit drugs. These are DOJ's own tallies; the release's figures are counts of enforcement activity, not a measure of crime levels. - The U.S. Sentencing Commission (Oct 15) introduced a new Supervised Release Revocations Data Report.
