  • BLS's Usual Weekly Earnings release for the third quarter (out today, Oct 21): median weekly earnings of the nation's 122.2 million full-time wage and salary workers were $1,232 (not seasonally adjusted). BLS says that was 1.5% higher than a year earlier, "compared with a gain of 3.5 percent" in the Consumer Price Index for All Urban Consumers (CPI-U) over the same period. BLS Usual Weekly Earnings, Q3 2026
  • On a seasonally adjusted basis, BLS puts median weekly earnings at $1,239 in the third quarter, down from $1,258 in the second quarter. Women's median was $1,127, or 83.4% of men's $1,352. BLS
  • EIA's weekly survey (released Oct 20, prices as of Oct 19): US regular gasoline averaged $4.284 per gallon, down 4.7 cents from the week before and $1.265 above a year earlier. EIA Gasoline and Diesel Fuel Update
  • On-highway diesel averaged $6.276 per gallon, up 9.7 cents on the week and $2.656 above a year earlier. EIA
  • Regional range for gasoline: the West Coast was highest at $5.557 (California $6.031) and the Gulf Coast lowest at $3.784. Florida averaged $3.981, essentially flat on the week. EIA

What this doesn't tell us: the earnings figure is a median for full-time workers from a household survey, so it does not capture part-time workers, hours or total household income, and the gap with CPI is a comparison BLS reports, not a household-by-household measure. Fuel prices are weekly averages including taxes; one week is not a trend. Diesel feeds into freight and food costs with a lag, but this data does not show by how much.
