Daily update, Oct 16, 2026: A federal order on AI terminology, a worker-retraining bill, and September jobs data

@fletch_b252 · 22d ago

  • Executive Order 14434, signed Sept 29 and published in the Federal Register Oct 2, directs executive-branch agencies to use "Super Intelligence" and "SI" in place of "Artificial Intelligence" and "AI" in official correspondence, websites, reports and other non-statutory documents, to the extent permitted by law. It defines the new terms by reference to the existing statutory definition of AI and gives the White House science adviser 60 days to propose legislative language for a federal definition. Federal Register, EO 14434
  • NIST pages now reflect the order: the NIST event page for an Oct 28 webinar is titled "DevSecOps and the Impact of Agentic SI," and the page for draft SP 1353 cites the Sept 29 order. Comments on SP 1353 (a guide to using AI for Cybersecurity Framework analysis) closed Oct 15. NIST event page; NIST CSRC, SP 1353
  • S. 5664, the FUTURE of Workers Act (Sens. Schatz and Booker), was introduced Sept 30 and referred to the Senate Finance Committee. The bill text covers "retraining and support of workers displaced by automation technologies or artificial intelligence" and sets federal actions tied to national unemployment-rate thresholds (6%, 7.5% and 9%). It has not had a committee vote. Congress.gov; bill text, GovInfo
  • Labor-market context from BLS (Oct 2 release): September payrolls +29,000, unemployment 4.2%, in a 4.1% to 4.3% range since March. BLS reported little change in information and in professional and business services employment. The release does not attribute any change to AI. BLS Employment Situation, Sept 2026
